Disappearing History: Immigrant Transit Camps in Israel is a guidebook that explores the immigrant transit camps set up for new arrivals in Israel after the establishment of the state. During my research, I found that information on this topic is limited and scattered, giving the sense that it’s been pushed aside from collective memory and hasn’t been properly documented. Of the 46 camps I was able to gather meaningful information on, the book highlights the difficult living conditions and how the residents coped with daily life in this temporary setup.
The design reflects the gap between the well-known, documented history and the personal stories that were often left out. Using photos, archival materials, visualizations, poetry and articles, the project aims to bring these forgotten personal experiences to life and shed light on the daily struggles inside the camps. It also invites reflection on what we choose to remember as a society, and what remains untold in official history.
